Skim Dex

Skim Dex has been in the kayak collection since October 2007

Actually, we got the first one to have as a joint extra kayak, but it turned out that Pia enjoyed it so much that we sold her Ellesmere and ordered another Skim Dex. The second Dex arrived at the end of 2008. The first is in standard material and orange! The latest one, which is Pias, is in carbon/kevlar and has built-in foot pump and the forward firing path is moved backwards. Pias Dex is greenish green. The orange one was eventually sold on, but the green-green ones are still there 🙂

We both think the Dexen is a fun and flexible little kayak that is easy to maneuver and gives good results on edging and steering and despite its short length it still feels relatively easy to drive and not sluggish like many other short kayaks. It's also a bit funny that Skim brought out some kayaks that stand out a little extra with Dex and Distance. Otherwise, many are very similar.

Maybe nothing for really long trips, but it still holds a surprising amount and Pia has worn it up to two-week tours in all cases. Available with both large and small cockpit opening, ours has small.

The deck is 495cm long and 51cm wide.

  1. Hello Erik,
I've had my Dex (standard stock) too since 2006/2007 (I think) – and it was probably the best purchase of my life! As a small paddler, it fits perfectly. Wondering if you have made Skim Kayaks? Mine has started to leak and I need to fix. Tried last summer with fiberglass fabric and putty that I bought at Biltema. But it didn't turn out to be a success - it appeared that the materials didn't go together with the kayak's material. So if you have any tips (preferably with a brand and where to get them), I would be incredibly grateful. Because now I want to go out paddling again!!! Etc. Sonja
